What Is Garment (Style) Yielding

WHAT IS GARMENT (STYLE) YIELDING?

Yielding is a process that is used when first making the pattern and letter the marker to calculate exactly how much yardage it requires to produce the garment so that customers could make the decision on his/her product price by building a clear unit economics sheet.

Yielding Calculation

  • How wide is the fabric which determines how many pattern pieces can fit
  • Once width is determined then how far down

The combination of Width x Length calculations of your fabric will tell factorie or designers the amount of yardage needed per garment in order to produce or place an order for the right quantity.

Id Depth Explanation Needed…

Ex.  A standard t-shirt made with cotton Jersey fabric that is 60” wide may require 1 yard  vs, the same tee shirt made with cotton Jersey fabric that is 52”  may require 1.25 yard. Why is that important? Well initially it may not seem like it does make that much of a difference but when you start to do your unit economics then best to see if there are short-term and long-term benefits.

If for instance you have a difference in pricing of $0.50 between the width, and the base price is $4.00 of 60” wide and $4.00 for 52” wide fabric, but the yield difference is .25/yard. Then your alculation looks something like .25 x $4 = $1. We know $1 doesn’t seem like a big savings when thinking about it that way but on the basis of compounding it adds up quickly. If you were to do 300 units that will be a saving of $300 dollar. Understanding how to stretch every dollar and having discipline to do so will help shape your point of view on what it really takes to build something grand.

Remember not every fabric has these options for you to buy in different widths, but when you do come across it and if it’s worth it then make sure you choose accordingly. All of this information can easily be provided to you by your grading / marker facility or person if you ask for it.

A professionally operated establishment should be also familiar with all the different fabric available on the market to guide you when making the right decision before you do your grading and marker while assessing your yielding. Although this is an overall strategy that is used in the fashion industry, our Factory partners on AVmade Marketplace in the custom request part of our service, will provide you a broke down of rates on what is what, making the process efficient and streamlined.
